If you’ve been thinking about a Mudgee weekend getaway, there’s a good chance you’ve been approaching it all wrong, because we’re all getting pretty good at going away without actually switching off.
You know the drill. Leave the city after work on Friday, arrive late, have a wine, wake up early on Saturday because you don’t want to “waste the day”, squeeze in breakfast, a winery, lunch, a walk, dinner, maybe a few more drinks, then wake up on Sunday already thinking about the drive home.
By Monday, you’re back at your desk wondering why you’re exhausted.
Turns out, there’s a reason for that.
New research has found almost two-thirds of NSW workers have returned from a holiday needing a holiday from the holiday. Say what!? And 44 per cent say they feel guilty doing nothing while they’re away.
We’ve somehow turned having time off into another thing to be productive at.
But what if, instead of trying to squeeze more into your next getaway, you stayed an extra night?
That’s the idea behind a new travel offer in the Mudgee Region, where you can book two nights and get a third night free. And it might honestly be the excuse we all need to slow down.
Your weekend away probably needs one more night

Mudgee has long been an easy choice for a country escape from Sydney. There are vineyards to explore, long lunches to savour, cellar doors, country pubs, galleries, markets and plenty of beautiful places to stay.
But rather than encouraging you to cram as much as possible into 48 hours, the region is encouraging visitors to stay for 72.
The Rest Rebate gives NSW residents a complimentary Sunday night when they book Friday and Saturday nights at one of the participating properties across the Mudgee Region.
Which means Sunday doesn’t have to be the day you frantically pack your bags, check out and hit the road.
You can sleep in or go for a long breakfast, read a book by the pool, have a cocktail before 12pm or, if you’re feeling really radical, do absolutely nothing at all.
Because we’re really not very good at switching off
The research behind the initiative paints a fairly familiar picture.
More than three-quarters of NSW workers say they’ve gone to work stressed, burnt out or mentally exhausted, while 64 per cent check work emails outside of their working hours. More than a third check work messages within the first hour of waking.
So perhaps it’s no surprise that simply taking a couple of days off isn’t always enough to feel rested.
The first day of a holiday is often spent getting there. The second disappears in a blur. Then suddenly it’s Sunday afternoon and you’re mentally preparing for Monday.
Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides, a clinical psychologist who specialises in burnout, says our brains need time to properly move out of that stressed, switched-on state.
Which makes a three-night getaway sound less indulgent and a little more sensible.
Mudgee is made for taking it slow

Of course, you don’t need a scientific reason to spend three nights in Mudgee.
The region is particularly good at the sort of travel that doesn’t require a strict itinerary.
Spend a morning wandering around town before settling in for lunch. Pick a winery or two rather than trying to tick off every cellar door. Take the long way back to your accommodation. Stop somewhere because it looks interesting. Browse boutiques and pick up knickknacks for guests or little treats for yourself.
There are four distinct places to explore across the region, from Mudgee itself to Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone, each with their own food, history, shops and places to linger.
And when you’ve got an extra night up your sleeve, you can actually let the trip unfold naturally rather than race through it with a to-do list to check off.
Where to stay

The Rest Rebate is available at a selection of properties across the Mudgee Region, including farm stays, boutique accommodation, hotels and country retreats.
Participating properties include Evamor Valley, Evanslea Luxury Boutique Accommodation, Glenayr Farm, McKenna Terraces, Owl Head Lodge, Peppertree Farm, Perry Street Hotel, The Clairfield, The Cudgee at Mudgee, The Horatio Mudgee, Wandarra Homestead and Winning Post Motor Inn.
The offer is simple: book Friday and Saturday nights at a participating property and your Sunday night is on the house.
So if you’ve been saying you need to get away but haven’t quite managed to make it happen, perhaps this is your sign.
Offer available until the end of October 2026.
