Where To Eat, Play And Stay In Ballarat This Summer

Ballarat might be best known for its gold rush past, but come December to February, this regional Victorian favourite (less than an hour and a half from Melbourne) is all about Euro-esque Alps, lazy lake loops and a food scene that quietly flexes harder than you’d expect. Whether you’re plotting a weekend escape or building the ultimate road trip through Victoria’s west, Ballarat in Summer (and its ridiculously good surroundings) delivers big-time.

Drink

Ballarat’s food scene punches well above its weight. Especially in Summer, when menus lean into fresh, local produce. If you’re keen to mix things up, start with a hands-on experience. Kilderkin Distillery runs gin masterclasses where you can craft your own botanical blend, while Itinerant Spirits –  Ballarat’s newest distillery, cocktail bar and restaurant – is a must for spirit sippers. Housed in the historic 1860s Ballarat Goods Shed, the venue pairs on-site distilling of Gallivanter Gin, Vansetter Vodka, and Whiskey with cocktail workshops that’ll seriously upgrade your home bar game.

For something that will paw-sively make you smile, book into Pup & Pinot at The Shared Table, where you can meet some four-legged locals while sipping regional wines. Yep. Drops and doggies… name a better combination. We’ll wait …

Eat

Then, when hunger hits properly, Ballarat has plenty of options. Meigas is the go-to for Spanish plates made for sharing. Think bold flavours, relaxed energy and “just one more thing” menus. Similarly, Pancho brings Latin American favourites to the table, ideal for debaucherous dinners that stretch longer than planned. Or, for a slower, more refined affair, Eleanora is built for elegant long lunches where time becomes irrelevant.

Finally, if you’re chasing some of the best chips and gravy in Australia, Chequers Chippery is an absolute must. Their hot, golden chips smothered in salty gravy (and that cheese pull!) are the stuff of Ballarat legend.

Play

Fuelled up and ready for some fun? Fortunately, Ballarat really shines when the sun’s out. Ballarat Wildlife Park offers an excellent Summer escape, where kangaroos, koalas and other native icons are basically waiting to be added to your camera roll. Alternatively, if you prefer your parks paired with a picnic, head to Ballarat Botanical Gardens with a rug and a basket full of snacks firmly deployed.

For a classic Ballarat ritual, loop Lake Wendouree. Walk it, jog it, cycle it – just don’t rush it. The views are elite, especially as the sun starts to dip. If forest walks are more your thing, head to Woowookarung Regional Park for towering trees and peaceful trails. Or, drive up to Mount Buninyong for panoramic summit views that make the short climb so very worth it.

From lakeside loops and vineyard ventures to leisurely long lunches, Ballarat in Summer is not just a stopover - it’s the destination

If you’re after a bit of R&R, award-winning Ballarat Sanctuary Day Spa (within the serene gardens of the Mercure Hotel and Convention Centre)  is a must-visit. With six luxury treatment rooms, including two dual suites, private bathing, a floating pedicure lounge, and a relaxation lounge with an open fireplace, it’s little wonder it’s been named Australia’s Best Luxury Day Spa twice (2021 & 2019) and Australia’s Best Hotel Spa (2019).

And, then there’s the wildcard move: escaping Ballarat altogether (briefly). Just 40 minutes west, the Pyrenees region is your antidote to crowded wine regions. Rolling vineyards, quiet country towns and wines with serious personality await. Spend a day hopping between Dalwhinnie, Blue Pyrenees Estate, Taltarni, Mount Avoca and Summerfield, where cellar-door exclusives, long lunches and cool-climate drops do all the heavy lifting.

Insider hack: For those short on time, The Pyrenees has come to you. Pyrenees Unearthed has popped up at The George Hotel, pouring wines from more than 10 Pyrenees wineries alongside a menu celebrating local producers. Minimal effort. Maximum reward.

Stay

Once you’ve eaten … and explored your way through Ballarat, you’ll need somewhere worthy of a good night’s sleep. For those travelling with a crew or keeping things casual, NRMA Holiday Park is an easy, family-friendly base.

If boutique is more your vibe, Hotel Vera brings the luxe details and polished design, while The Provincial nails classic comfort right in the heart of town. For a true taste of local life, the Royal Oak Hotel (main feature image) – complete with a fabulous pub downstairs to enjoy a hearty meal or a drink – is the best place in town to blend in like a Ballaratian.

Stretching the trip beyond Ballarat? Excellent decision. Sonder House Retreat in Clunes is made for switching off properly, while Tuki Retreat serves rolling hills and next-level serenity. Mooramong Tiny Houses are perfect for a minimalist escape, and Unyoked is for anyone ready to unplug completely and disappear into nature. (Temporarily).

Wine lovers, save the best for last. Summerfield Winery and Accommodation lets you wake up among the vines, coffee in hand, with absolutely nowhere you need to be.
