There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when a country town stops being somewhere you’re passing through and gives you a reason to stay for the night.
Bathurst is one of those places that’s rewarding an overnight stop.
This November, the city is leaning into its after-dark side with BX After Dark, a new year-long program bringing Bathurst’s heritage streets, hidden laneways, local food, regional drinks, music and stories to life after sunset.
And the opening weekend looks like a particularly good excuse to make the drive west.
On 13 and 14 November, the historic heart of Bathurst will become the setting for The Wandering Table, an immersive dining experience that swaps the usual dinner-at-one-venue format for something far more interesting: three venues, three courses, local drinks and a guided wander through the city as its stories unfold around you.
It’s part progressive dinner, part history lesson, part very good excuse for a country weekend.
Two nights, two very different sides of Bathurst
The clever thing about The Wandering Table is that you can choose your kind of night.
Friday 13 November is Stories After Dark, an intimate opening night centred around Bathurst’s historic heart. Saturday 14 November is The Gathering, a livelier affair taking over the Keppel Street precinct with music, bold flavours and a little more energy.
Or, if you’re making a weekend of it, do both.
Friday night: Stories After Dark
The first evening begins in Kings Parade with a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and Wiradjuri cultural storytelling before guests head off in small groups into the historic centre.
From there, the dinner becomes a progressive little journey through Bathurst.
You’ll visit Norma Joan, Firewater and The George, stopping at each for one course and a premium regional beverage, while moving through the atmospheric streets and laneways in between.
There’s food, wine and local produce, but there’s also the city itself.
Along the way, local storytellers will share colourful characters, forgotten moments and some of the lesser-known chapters of Bathurst’s history, connecting the places you’re walking through with the stories that shaped them.
Each venue will also get its own BX After Dark makeover, with lighting, music, styling and plenty of atmosphere.
So rather than sitting down for three courses and calling it a night, you’re moving through the city as dinner unfolds around you.

Saturday night: The Gathering
If Friday is the more intimate, history-soaked side of Bathurst, Saturday turns the volume up.
The Gathering begins at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery with another Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and Wiradjuri cultural storytelling, before the evening heads into the Keppel Street precinct.
This time, the three stops are El Guapo Cantina, DeJorja and The Hub, with every group visiting all three venues for another progressive three-course dinner paired with premium local beverages.
Expect bold flavours, music, transformed venues and a little more movement and energy as the evening progresses.
Regional producers including Winburndale Wines, Rock Forest Vineyard and Renzaglia Wines will feature across the night, putting some of the Central West’s local flavour firmly on the table.
And, naturally, there are a few surprises planned along the way.
Make a weekend of it
While The Wandering Table is the reason to book the November trip, Bathurst is the kind of destination where it makes sense to turn one event into a whole weekend.
Spend your days exploring the historic city centre, discovering its heritage buildings and galleries, eating your way through the local food scene or venturing further into the Central Tablelands before coming back into town for the evening.
Then, as the light fades, see the city from another perspective.
That’s really the idea behind BX After Dark: familiar places become something different after sunset, with heritage, food, culture, storytelling and hospitality bringing the city into its own at night.
And these November events are just the beginning.
BX After Dark will continue into 2027 with Where the World Comes to Celebrate during Bathurst 12 Hour race week in February, followed by Harvest After Dark, a Central West harvest celebration curated by Chef Matt Moran in May.
But first, there are two November nights to put in the diary.
Because sometimes the best way to discover a town is to stop treating it like a stopover.
Bathurst, after dark, looks like a pretty good reason to stay awhile.
