There are a number of exquisite hotels in Bowral but Berida Hotel truly is a stand-out. Walking through the double door entrance to Berida Hotel, set underneath a grandiose stained-glass arch, feels like stepping into another era. Greeted by a grand chandelier, rustic wooden staircase, ornate floor to ceiling wallpapering and a literal knight in shining armour, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the entranceway for something out of Downtown Abbey.
Far from a mere facade, the lobby sets the stage for an estate where every room pays tribute to the indulgent spirit of the 1920s. There are nooks and crannies everywhere – hidden little rooms to sit, think, read or chat, all of which are brought to life through individually curated decorations, giving each room a character of its own.

The concierge staff are impeccably dressed and extremely accommodating. Even the room keys are fancy – heavy gold metal keyrings set with a tasseled fringe.
Berida Hotel is nestled in the idyllic Southern Highlands, a stone’s throw away from the main street in Bowral; a thriving strip of charming eclectic stores, homely country pubs and a wide range of local eateries. It’s approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Sydney and also close to the train line, making it easily accessible for all types of travellers.
Rooms & SuitesÂ

The rooms are breath-taking. Drenched in gilded wallpaper and velvet, the space channels Madrid’s Palacio Real over hospitality chic. Each suite has been decorated with an eye for detail; from the crested throw pillows on the bed to the gold ostrich lamps on the bedside table, these rooms have been dressed to impress.
In a post-pandemic era, where many hotels have done away with the little luxuries we used to expect, Berida Hotel is the exception. The mini-bar is stocked with a range of salty snacks, sweet treats and locally-sourced wines that just beckon to be tasted.
And of course, if you simply can’t bring yourself to leave the comfortable luxury you’re surrounded by, throw on the cosy white robe and order yourself a meal to the room – only a phone call or QR-code away!
AperitifsÂ

If you can tear yourself away from the crisp white sheets, mini-bar and generous-sized robes, Aspinall’s Bar & Lounge is definitely worth a visit. The space is dripping with old-world charm and boasts the largest selection of carefully curated, world class whiskey in the Southern Highlands.
The hand-cut fries are unforgettable if you’re after a pre-dinner snack, or for those looking to graze, the cheese board does not disappoint.
This is the kind of spot begging for a selfie, so come dressed to impress as if your Instagram depends on it.
Dining

Bistro Sociale, Berida Hotel’s European-style bistro with a French twist pairs contemporary recipes with quality local produce. Each plate is a testament to Head Chef Nathan Jackson’s creative flair and technical prowess.
The open fireplace sets the scene for a cosy, romantic winter evening and the outdoor terrace provides a picturesque setting for an Aperol Spritz and some tasty starters in the summer.
Bistro Sociale is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as private events – but we highly recommend booking in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on an unforgettable dining experience.
Amenities
Stepping outside, verdant vines climb the facade of Berida Hotel, evoking the timeless charm of the English countryside and creating a scene worthy of a Pride & Prejudice tableau.
If you’re a fan of physical activity, take yourself outside for a game of tennis or you can visit the fully-equipped fitness centre if you overindulged in deliciousness the night before.
There’s also a local wares and produce shop on premises showcasing condiments, art and goodies from local artisans. Perfect for gifting or for a little keepsake for yourself.
History
And if the hotel’s charm isn’t enough, its history is equally captivating. Originally built in 1925 as a private residence for Dr. Jessie Freeman and her family, the estate was gifted to the Red Cross in 1941 following the passing of Dr. Freeman’s husband.
It then served as a convalescent hospital for service personnel during and after the war, before becoming the Berida Junior Red Cross Home for children facing challenging family circumstances from 1951 to 1974.
In 1977, the property was reimagined as a health retreat, and by 1990, it was first transformed into a hotel.
If you’re after a self-care getaway, a bougie girl’s weekend or a romantic weekend escape, this is the place. With everything at your fingertips, you can choose to stay in or venture out and explore the stunning Southern Highlands. You really can’t go wrong!
